CONFERENCES
1. Roundtables on Transnationality: "From Rebellion to Revolution: Dynamics of Political Change", Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung (WBZ), 17-20 October 2012
The recent waves of protests and demonstrations in many countries around the world have reintroduced the question of revolution and grass-roots system change to the political and scholarly agenda. Whether it is the fight against autocratic and corrupt regimes or protests against market-driven politics, in many of these cases revolution is in the air or already on the streets. Against this background, the roundtables want to examine the dynamics of political (and often violent) unrest that lead to, or at least aims at, fundamental structural transformations of political regimes and alterations in power relations between the masses and the elites.
Based on an international essay competition, approximately 45 applicants will be invited to discuss their research, concerns and agendas with peers and prominent scholars in Berlin. The Irmgard Coninx Foundation will cover travel to and accommodation in Berlin.
The call for papers extends to scholars (max. up to 5 years after Ph.D.) and practitioners (e.g. workers in governmental or urban services, NGOs, journalists).. Submission deadline is June 30, 2012.

3. Workshop: "Arabic Pasts: Histories and Historiography - “What is in a Period? ‘Jāhiliyya’, ‘ʿAbbāsid’, and ‘Arab Spring’ in Arabic Historical Writing”, ISMC, Aga Khan University/SOAS, University of London,  28 September 2012
The Arabic historical tradition has known many different ways of marking time in the interests of religions, dynasties, nations, and social groups. Authors have used literary and rhetorical means to create and sustain new periods, and established notions have often been recycled and endowed with new meaning. The concept of Jāhiliyya has been reworked many times, and dynasties such as the Umayyads and ʿAbbāsids have taken on new significance in discourses of modern nations. New notions can come to life, such as, in the nineteenth century, the Crusading period as one of anti-colonial resistance. Today, the Arab Spring, a new period, has known its own markers of time, in Egypt, for example, named days are now part of national history, including “the Day of Rage” (yawm al-ghaḍab) and “the Friday of Departure” (Jumʿat al-raḥīl).
This fifth-annual Arabic Pasts workshop calls for papers that consider periodisation as a major issue for historians. Papers can cover any time period, from the classical age to the present. We will publish the proceedings as a special journal issue.
Please send abstracts of proposed papers (1 page of A4) to Dr Sarah Bowen Savant, این نشانی پست الکترونیک دربرابر spambot ها و هرزنامه ها محافظت می شود. برای مشاهده آن شما نیازمند فعال بودن جاواسکریپت هستید by 1 April 2012. Paper drafts will be due by 1 Sept. 2012.

10. Intern Vacancy: Assistant for Demographic and Economic Statistics, Gulf Labour Markets and Migration Program (GLMMP), Gulf Research Center Foundation (GRCF) - Geneva
The Gulf Research Center Foundation (GRCF) in Geneva and the Migration Policy Centre (MPC) at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence are formally launching their joint Gulf Labour Markets and Migration Program (GLMMP) in the spring of 2012. The GLMMP will deal with all major aspects – demographic, economic, legal, political, social – of migration to the Gulf, with a special focus on the six Gulf Cooperation Council members (GCC) Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
One of the main foci of the GLMMP is to establish a publically accessible demographic and economic database which contains data on a large number of migration relevant variables. The sources of the majority of these data will be primarily the national statistical sources of the GCC countries. Among the GCC countries, there are differences in terms of the type of data, the years they refer to, and the user-friendliness of the website. Even more importantly, the quality (accuracy and reliability) and comparability of the data is generally unknown.
GLMMP seeks an intern who would assist in the collection of data, assessing its quality, and its feeding into the GLMMP database in order to make it available through its public user-friendly database. She/he would also assist in preparing outputs of the database, for example in the form of short information sheets or policy papers, containing data (in form of tables, graphs and figures) and concise analysis. The workload is the equivalent of a part-time position.
The intern would work out of the GRCF office in Geneva. (S)he will also be required to travel occasionally to Florence for training/work sessions with Prof. Fargues at the EUI. The intern would work under the direction of the GLMMP Scientific Director Prof. Philippe Fargues (EUI) and GLMMP Program Manager Imco Brouwer (GRCF). (S)he would also be working together with Gulf migration, demographic and economic experts.
Ideally the intern would start on 1 April 2012 or as soon as possible after that date. (S)he should be available a period of 5 months or more. It may be possible to extend the internship beyond the summer of 2012.
In principle there will be no remuneration for the intern. A small contribution to expenses may be considered. In case of travelling for the GLMMP, travel and accommodation costs will be paid by the GRCF. After 5 months there is the possibility (no certainty) that a contract as research assistant will be offered.
Qualifications: Preferably a completed Ph.D. in demography or economics. Exceptionally completed MA in demography or economics may be sufficient. Demonstrated interest in migration and the Gulf. Fluent in English. Working knowledge of written Arabic.
Applications should include a (i) cover letter; (ii) CV; (iii) two references and may include also a publication and should be sent to این نشانی پست الکترونیک دربرابر spambot ها و هرزنامه ها محافظت می شود. برای مشاهده آن شما نیازمند فعال بودن جاواسکریپت هستید . There is no deadline. Applications will be reviewed on a continuous basis until the position has been filled. Hence candidates are strongly encouraged to apply as soon as possible. For further information, please contact Imco Brouwer.
