1. Positions: Three W3-Professorship for Islamic Religious Studies, Friedrich-Alexander-Universitaet Erlangen-Nuernberg

The Faculty of Humanity, Social Sciences and School of Theology invites applications for the following three positions at the planned Department of Islamic Religious Studies, to be occupied as soon as possible. These posts are initially limited to a period of five years, after which the positions can be tenured.

1) W3-Professorship for Islamic Religious Studies with a Focus on the Basic Texts of the Islamic Tradition. The Professor will be expected to adequately represent the foundations and methods of Quran Studies, Quran Commentary and Quran Exegesis, as well as Hadith Studies.

2) W3-Professorship for Islamic Religious Studies with a Practical Focus .The Professor will be expected to adequately represent the study of Islamic Norms in the fields of Ethics and Practice of Faith, including the aspects of Mysticism and Philosophy.

3) W3-Professorship for Islamic Religious Studies with a Systematic Focus. The Professor will be expected to adequately represent the study of Islamic Faith with special reference to the history of Islamic Theological Thought, including the aspects of Mysticism and Philosophy.

We also expect a contribution in consolidating and designating new Islamic religion-based Bachelors and Masters courses as well as the promotion of young talents in the field of Islamic Studies. The candidates will be expected to cooperate with existing university bodies, in particular with the Centre of Anthropology of Religion(s), or ZAR, and further promote national and international contacts. A good knowledge of Arabic is required. The applicant is expected to acquire sufficient knowledge of the German language within an acceptable time period. Lectures have to be held in German. In addition, we expect applicants to be thoroughly familiar with Muslim positions and inward perspectives.

Qualifications include a university degree, teaching skills, a PhD, and additional academic achievements. The latter may consist of a Habilitation or equivalent sundry qualification, which may include skills gained outside of university.

2. Call for Applications for the Doctoral Program of the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies, Berlin

Funded by the Excellence Initiative of the German Federal and State Governments the Graduate School will admit fifteen PhD students to its doctoral program to begin October 1, 2012. Up to ten of these candidates will receive a Graduate School grant; the other candidates will be supported in their quest for funding.

The Graduate School investigates the plurality, changeability, and global connectedness of Muslim cultures and societies. It invites applications from candidates whose dissertation project fits one of the Graduate School's Research Areas. Successful applicants will have a master's degree in one of the disciplines represented at the Graduate School, with a ranking, where applicable, of above average. The language of communication is English. Admission is for one year, and, contingent upon a positive evaluation after the first year of study, will be extended for another twelve months. Admission and grant can be extended for a total of three years.

Annual Meeting of the Working of Geography of Religion in the German Society for Geography (DGfG) in co-operation with Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, Göttingen.

Papers with a non-European focus, theoretical inputs and conceptual approaches to a Geography of religion are also welcome. Conference languages are English and German.

4. Conference: "Southern Horrors: The Dark Side of the Mediterranean World Seen from Northern Europe and America (1453-1939) ", Université de Nice-Sophia Antipolis, 19-21 April 2012

The conference is organised by the CIRCPLES research centre (Nice), in collaboration with the Research Group in Urban Culture (University of Northumbria et University of Newcastle)

By Mediterranean World is understood the geographical area extending from the Strait of Gibraltar to the Bosphorus and the Levant. The following themes are not exclusive. They provide some indications as to the desired overall orientation of the conference:

* Violence in the Mediterranean world: wars, massacres, assassinations, persecutions, forced migrations.
Natural disasters: volcanic eruptions, earthquakes... Diseases and epidemics: the plague, malaria...
* The horrors of religion: Catholicism and superstition...
* From classical grandeur to the horrors of the present: meditations on decadence etc.

Proposals for 25-minute papers, in the form of an abstract in English or French of 250 words with a short C.V., should be submitted by 20 November 2011. 5. Third International Conference on Islam: "Islam and Democracy", Madison, Wisconsin, April 13-14, 2012

The objective of the conference is to create an environment for the discussion of different aspects of Islam in an academic setting and in a non-speculative way. The conference will serve the purpose of bringing together academics, scholars and researchers interested in different aspects of Islam, and will provide an opportunity to share new findings, approaches and research on Islam. Selected papers from the conference will be published as a book.

Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following:

6. University of Tehran Master Program on "Iranian Studies"

The Faculty of World Studies of the University of Tehran is now receiving applications for the first MA program course on "Iranian Studies" to be started from February 2012. The course is specifically designed and intended for non-Iranian students and it will be held in English. Students will, however, receive special training courses to improve their knowledge of the Persian language during their stay in Iran.

The program will contain 2 semesters of intensive course-works, during which students are required to stay in Tehran, and 2 more semesters for writing a dissertation, which students can arrange to work on from their home countries or elsewhere. Those who can successfully complete the course requirements will receive a degree of "Master of Arts in Iranian Studies" from the University of Tehran.
