Conference: "The Construction(s) of Conflict and Peace", Exeter Centre for Ethno-Political Studies’ (EXCEPS), University of Exeter, 9-10 July 2012 The manner in which conflicts are framed is intimately linked to conflicts’ various stages, including efforts to mitigate and/or abate their violent effects, be it through military intervention, humanitarian aid and/or the creation of new political dispensations. The shared understandings that provide the bases for these frames, however, are the products of various discursive practices within governments, NGOs, academia, journalism and manifold cultural productions and (e.g., literature, visual arts, museums, etc.). These practices are contingent and messy, and often deeply contested. The conference will investigate these practices from a multidisciplinary perspective, incorporating insights from both practitioners and academics. It seeks to uncover how the interplay of economic incentives, organizational cultures, political and social climates, and personal and collective beliefs lead to the production and privileging of particular types of knowledge vis-à-vis conflict and peace. Conference Convenor: Professor Gareth Stansfield. Deadline for abstracts and panel proposals: 15 January 2012. Conference: " Cities, Actors, and Power in the Arab and Muslim World", Mediterranean and Middle East Research Group (GREMMO - University of Lyon 2), Lyon, 29-30 October 2012 This conference aims to explore the government of cities, and not only big cities, in the Arab and Muslim world, in light of the recent political uprisings and the challenges of urbanization. One of the objectives of this conference is to discuss and clarify the difficulties, especially institutional ones, that municipal authorities have in confronting those challenges. We suggest the following hypothesis: authoritarian regimes hinder and deny the exercise of municipal powers that are fundamental for managing contemporary urban complexity, in particular in major cities. The first purpose of the conference is to get an overview of the diversity of urban governance in the Arab and Muslim World and to identity the different actors, their powers, and limits on their agency. The second purpose of the conference is to consider the process of urban management over the short- and long-term. How have urban management and power over cities evolved since the beginning of the Islamic period? Papers may be in English or French to be submitted to
