2. Workshop: „Governance Beyond the Centre: Informality, Institutions and Contested Power Structures in Authoritarian Contexts”, Berlin, 9-10 February 2012
The workshop is organized by Arbeitsstelle Politik des Vorderen Orients in cooperation with SFB 700 “Governance in Areas of Limited Statehood”,  Freie Universität Berlin.
The workshop will provide contributions that investigate forms of governing and contestation beyond central regimes and reflect on their significance for analyzing the changing dynamics of government and politics. It will draw intensively on case studies from the Arab World while reaching out to experiences in Africa, Latin-America and Asia as well. Conceptually, different authors will provide theoretical explanations for the transformation of state in its relation to social forces as well as for the relation between formal and informal institutions. In understanding politics beyond the centre, the workshop aims to close the existing research gap on contested politics in developing countries enhancing it by insights from the periphery.
Speakers: Hala Caroline Abou-Zaki, Paul Amar, Fadi Bardawil, Malika Bouziane, Cilja Harders, Anja Hoffmann, Thomas Hüsken, Mohammed Ibahrine, Katharina Lenner, Jean-Pierre Olivier de Sardan, Finn Stepputat (Keynote Speaker), Annemie Vermaelen and Lisa Wedeen. 6. 4th International Conference of Mediterranean Worlds: “Domino Effects and Hybridization of the Mediterranean”, Istanbul, 5-7 Sept. 2012
This interdisciplinary conference is hosted by the Department of History, 29 Mayis University, in collaboration with The Mediterranean Seminar, University of California Santa Cruz; Bern University, Department of the History of the Art, TransMediterraneanStudies.
The goal of this conference is to focus on the effects of mixture upon various elements in the Mediterranean, dwelling on outcomes that are not easily labeled as one thing or other, defining the critical stages of change. This would, in a sense, be an extension of the macro-micro history dialectic and the diversity of the local regional outcomes.
The deadline for session and paper submissions is 27 February 2012. For further information, see http://medworldsfour.wordpress.com/
