2. Seminar for Doctoral and Post-Doctoral Candidates: "Linking Multiple Perspectives: Textual Approaches to the Intellectual History of the Islamic World", Free University Berlin, 30 June-1 July 2012
The seminar "Linking Multiple Perspectives: Textual Approaches to the Intellectual History of the Islamic World" is aiming at bringing together Doctoral and Post-Doctoral candidates from German universities, working on texts related to the intellectual history of the Islamic World. The workshop is intended to be a platform for sharing challenges in the field of Islamic Studies faced by young scholars.
The goal of the seminar will not only be to learn more about the participants' projects, but also to find common grounds in terms of methodology, critical practice and perspectives when dealing with texts. Although the focus of the seminar will be on studies related to the pre-modern period, topics on the contemporary Muslim world will also be covered.
Participants are expected to present their work in progress (20 minutes) giving special emphasis on methodological predicaments. Please send a short abstract until 1 April by e-mail to:

3. International Conference: "Democratic Governance: Challenges in Africa and Asia", University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA, 8-9 August 2012
The purpose of this conference is to bring together an international group of scholars and practitioners from diverse disciplines (economics, sociology, public administration, political economy, business, anthropology, law, political science, information technology, journalism, education, etc.) to collectively explore the multiple facets of the problems of democratic governance, particularly as they relate to corruption, and to suggest concrete strategies geared toward solving these problems in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and other regions of the world.
The ultimate goal of this conference is to provide a platform to discuss multiple dimensions of democratic governance and corruption and help devise strategies to improve governance practices and anti-corruption strategies for the countries in the developing world.
Proposals from individuals at all stages of their careers are welcome. Proposals by graduate students are particularly encouraged and will be evaluated separately by the program committee.

9. PhD Studentships in Citizenship, Civil Society and Rule of Law at the University of Aberdeen
The Centre for Citizenship, Civil Society and Rule of Law (CISRUL) offers a number of inter-disciplinary 3-year PhD studentships to start in September 2012. The studentships will include full fees (UK/Europe or overseas) and may include partial maintenance. We welcome applicants from anthropology, cultural and literary studies, history, legal theory and socio-legal studies, philosophy, politics, religious studies, sociology and theology, as well as area studies (Middle East/North Africa, Africa, Australasia, The Americas, Europe).

10. Re-launch of BRISMES Faith, Politics, and Society Research Network
The network aims to connect academics interested in the intersection between religion, politics, and society in Islamic communities. Researchers using historical or contemporary approaches associated with any of the disciplines represented within BRISMES are welcome to join. Initially, the network will focus on connecting virtually over a mailing list and on organizing panels or events associated with larger BRISMES events. If it is able to attract sufficient funding, it will hold an annual workshop to foster discussion on a theme fitting within this remit.
